As Celia had predicted, the next day was worse. With the elixir out of my system, my emotions spiraled into a blender of pain and sorrow. Worse, today was a double shift kind of day and Wednesday, which was our day off, was out of reach.
âHow did you sleep?â Meena handed me my coffee as we prepared Eclipse for the first arrivals.
I shrugged, took a sip, and straightened the menus on the tables. I scowled at the lights on the ceiling. Despite their preference for playful settings, they bounced until they aligned with one another. Anything out of order made me incredibly sad. âGood, until the potion wore off.â It resulted in a damp pillow and multiple trips to the bathroom.
âAh, Cal. I wish I had something to numb your pain.â Meena pointed at me and a smile crossed her face. âI dig your new outfit. Itâs jolly.â
âI wanted a change.â
Eclipse offered a variety of options, but I often picked purple or blue shades. Today, I chose an orange sleeveless top with jean shorts to break the cloudy mood that had nestled in my chest.
âHere they come.â Meena took her position at the bar, tray under her arm, a welcoming smile on her face.
âWhat will we do with the situation?â The first few hours were slow, and I had no desire for conversations that would cause me bawling. âWe know the specters have come out of hiding,â I dragged my words when the memory hit my mind, but I concentrated. âItâs someone big who wants to remake the world, possibly because theyâre unhappy with their share.â
âProbably cursed.â Meena nodded. âI donât believe itâs vampires. They simply lack the power to wake the entire population of specters and other dark beings. This guy? Heâs ancient and has influence.â
âThere are no rumors and the witches couldnât find any information on their part.â I turned when the door creaked, but whoever it was presumably came for a chat with Vali. âIf weâre talking god ancient, and Iâm not familiar with the rules about them, they could have planned it for a long time. Could be the reason we canât find a damn thing.â
Meena started cutting fruits in shapes for the drinks, adding fairy-dust whenever she thought appropriate. âI consulted the cards yesterdayââ
âYou mean tarots?â My eyes widened. Meena must be desperate to tap into their magic. I clenched my jaw when the person passed Valiâs control, but it was a woman. âArenât tarots the witchesâ territory?â
âWitches use it all the time, but it's not exclusively theirs.â Meena's ears shook in annoyance. âAnyway, tarots are challenging. From what I deciphered, thereâs an answer heading our way, but I donât know to what.â
âThat's really enlightening. I wouldnât know what to do with my life without that knowledge.â
Meena slapped my arm. âMaybe Cornelia has some insight. She hasnât dropped off in a while.â
âAnd now you're talking about witches.â
âI donât let my pride interfere, Cal.â Meena grinned, gestured to the glasses which gave them the sign to float on her tray, fighting for the best spot.
